THE LIMIT

Invited by Art Sheffield 2005 to create a piece for an imaginary audience member who "hated art," I formed a cover band that would play only songs by bands from Sheffield: Pulp, Def Leppard, Arctic Monkeys, Human League, Joe Cocker, and ABC. This group is made up of members of four of the biggest rock bands in Mexico. The band only existed for this event. The video is the only testimony to this imperfect cover band and its impact on the Sheffield audience.

Throughout this project, I realised the disparity in knowledge that exists between the two countries: we know even the smallest band from an English industrial city; they don't know a single Mexican band, even our most famous ones. The English have conquered the world with their music and culture, but they don't know what's being produced anywhere else. We worship them, while they ignore us. The irony of the piece acts as a defense mechanism. By showing their disbelief, we achieved a small victory.
